Debes Creer
En Ti (DCET), which is the Spanish acronym for Believe in Yourself,
was founded in 1998 to assist the fast-growing number of Hispanic/Latino
families in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. As a private, non-profit
corporation established under section 501c(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code, is dedicated to provide cultural programs for
the social and economic well-being of Hispanic youth and their
families, helping them in the areas of literacy, education, mentoring,
and personal and business development.
National Affiliation
In October of 2000, DCET became an affiliate of SER-Jobs for
Progress National, Inc., a network of 54 community-based centers
located in 17 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico,
with headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Understanding the needs of an underserved
population
Before incorporating DCET as a non-profit organization, founder
Elvia Wallace-Martinez saw the need of assisting Hispanic/Latino
families and designed DCET as a Spanish family values program
through a radio talk show, two TV segments and four newspaper
columns. The results have been wide outreach of thousands of
Hispanic families needing assistance in their process of assimilation
and acculturation.
Maintaining
values, identity, and self esteem
DCET was formed to help young people and their families
to preserve their values by simultaneously helping students
maintain school grades, promoting literacy and offering
a referral and information system to connect them to health,
social and human services.
A
sense of "believing in themselves"
This is the motto of the organization. By molding a defined
identity and pride in their culture, youth and their families
improve their educational and cultural skills. In turn,
this helps them in their process to become successful
members of society while preventing dependency on government
assistance and high school dropout. This
is what DCET is all about
